What is the difference between coffee capsules and coffee pods?

As you can see from the above image they are physically two different products …
The coffee capsule is the image on the left. It is cylindrical single-serve vacuum packed capsules that require a machine compatible with the capsule. Coffee pods – the image on the right – are round pods placed into a filter to have a brewed coffee.
The Difference in The Way They Are Produced
Coffee capsules are vacuum packed and coffee pods are packed in single doses.
Vacuum packing coffee capsules ensures the best hygiene and avoids external agents like oxygen, humidity and heat. Whereas coffee pods are packed in single doses and the roasted, ground coffee is measured and pressed within two sheets of paper. Coffee pods usually contain 7g of coffee and coffee capsule contain 5-7gs of coffee.

Last year Australia consumed over 1494 tonnes of capsule coffee. That’s roughly $134.1 million dollars worth of coffee. Australia’s total expenditure on all things coffee rose to $1 billion dollars in 2013. Half of fresh-ground coffee sales are in capsule coffee[1]. With this increase in coffee expenditure came a rise in sales for coffee capsule machine: machine sales rose 22% in 2013.
